A 19 year old senior at Syracuse University studying psychology, Laura Natalya Rodriguez was accidentally shot and killed by her brother this week while he was showing off a new gun.
An older sibling gave Rodriguez CPR and called 911 after the shooting, which investigators believe was accidental, although interviews were still underway Tuesday, KHOU reported.
“It’s a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Houston police Sgt. Matthew Brady said.
The woman’s parents were also at home during the shooting, authorities said.
“Prelim info is the female was shot as other family members were inside the home,” Houston police tweeted Tuesday.
“It is with great sadness I write today of the passing of a member of our Syracuse University community,” the school’s associate vice president and dean of students, Marianne Thomson, wrote in an email Wednesday to students and staff. “Yesterday, Laura Rodriguez, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, died in a tragic accident in her hometown of Houston, Texas, where she spent the fall semester studying remotely.”
Rodriguez, an “outstanding student,” was the first person in her family to attend college, Thomson said, adding that grief counseling would be available to students and faculty if needed.
Though no charges have been filed as of early Wednesday in the ongoing investigation
